It’s Over

Written with and for Leo Sayer’s “Thunder In My Heart” album release of 1979. Writing with Leo was always a blast. He was always so quick, bursting with ideas and wonderfully funny. If we had as many hits together as we had laughs…. Anyway, I came up with the piano riff that starts the tune (that’s me on the record with Jeff Porcaro and friends) while we were looking for ideas one sunny afternoon at his rented house in Laurel Canyon. Or maybe I had the riff in my pocket and started playing it to see what Leo would do. Whatever. Leo went into creative overdrive and I went along for the ride. It remains one of my favorites of the five co-writes he and I did for the album. The tracking session at Richard Perry’s Studio 55 was a hoot. Everybody got way into the groove. Slammin’ it. As well as singing his ass off, Leo plays some really funky “harp” on the track. R. Perry’s production is immaculate. Definitely five stars. Start to finish, it was a joyous musical experience. Wish it didn’t have to be over.

Thanks on Thanksgiving, to arrive home and find this one in the mail. I really liked Leo Sayer from his very early “One Man Band” stuff to his blockbuster hits. He has that outrageously versatile voice that he really does use to “rip it up” on this one. Very nice piano intro, but I really can’t pickup his harp playing on this piece. I’ve only listened twice (on the laptop speakers); maybe the headphones will pull them out.

Anyway, this is a very fun song with a great groove: a real anticipation of what would become the “synthesizer 80’s,” except using lots of guitars and piano to create that sound.

This is a fun tune, Tom. Thanks for the lovely Thanksgiving gift!!
Love Leo’s voice and, of course, that Porcaro groove really drives the track.

So glad to receive these gems on the blog………hope you and MB had a lovely Thanksgiiving Day.

    Best,

    Peter G.

    Hi Tom,

What a great number, Leo Was and is Unique, discovered as you would know by the Late Adam Faith

Adam made a phone call and got Leo a Record Deal, after a chance meeting.in a bar where Leo was singing,

Living in England at that time, I saw a lot of Leo, we could do with more singers off Leo’s Elk

these days they seem a bit thin on the ground . Thanks for sharing it with us.

    Sincerely Hudson Rivers

No wonder I was a Leo Sayer fan back when. This is a wonderful song and I did not know that Tom was involved then. I owned a retail audio store in Berkeley during the late 70s and throughout the 80s. We were all huge Tom Snow fans and his “Hungry Nights” CD was a fav demo record for all of us then.

Now I know why I liked this Leo Sayer tune so much: Tom had his fingerprint on it.

    Wonderful tune!
